Libra, positioned halfway through the astrological year, commences at Autumnal Equinox. A set of starry scales is an ideal depiction of the sign that symbolizes the middle point between growth/decline, youth/age, day/night, spring/fall, male/female, and acid/alkaline balances. 

            As the quintessential sign of balance, Libra “governs” the kidneys as they balance salt/potassium, acid/alkaline, plus the fluid levels within the bloodstream, thus strongly influencing our blood pressure. As the sign of marriage, the Libra-governed kidneys partner with many other systems of the body to maintain optimal fluid and electrolyte balances within the body. One marvels at the insights of ancient medical astrologers!

            In his Geometry of Meaning, the significant physicist and research astrologer Arthur M. Young (he solved the mysteries of Bell Helicopter flight technology) correlated the seventh stage of matter-in-motion to Libra, the 7th sign. He depicts this fact by dividing a pendulum’s back-and-forth swing into twelve stages that perfectly match the traditional character and physical function of the twelve zodiac signs. How does this work for the notably charming Libra?

            The pendulum’s swing commences at Aries, “acceleration” 1st sign. At Libra, the pendulum achieves halfway on its observable swing. Young labels this cyclic midpoint as “position”. Here, the swing pauses and the pendulum looks back, readying for its return swing! Personally, I refer to Libra as the great “Pause Point” of the zodiacal cycle and the quiet space between observation and reaction, diastole and systole, or the pause between two breaths. 

            One observes this “pause” reaction in strongly Libran individuals when confronted with dining choices or similar considerations. We note the balance mechanism in Libras confronted with nearly any opinion. This sign governs the objective and reasoning faculties where studied contemplation occurs. Pure observation is represented as Libra’s mental function within the Air sign trio and the zodiac! 

            Physically, Libra season emphasizes both kidney and ovarian health - even moreso this month. Why is that? Libra and its “ruler” Venus co-rule both organs and Venus is now in her sign of detriment, Scorpio. However, there are so many variant kidney conditions and noted causes!  I will be discussing these and their associate herbs in my upcoming October 17^th  lecture “The Astrological Portrait of Kidney Disease”, at our yearly “Herbalism & Medical Astrology Summit”.

THE LIBRA-ARIES AXIS FULL AND NEW MOON

Both the recent September 26th Full Moon plus four weeks - and next, the upcoming October 10th New Moon plus at least two weeks suggests a concentration of cosmic stimulus across the kidney-adrenal-brain axis, inclusive of ovaries (Libra) and eyes (Aries). Potential effects are heightened within forty-eight hours of each event. At the new Moon, fluidic pressure and “strange currents” are pulled to the Libra-governed regions whereas the full Moon is binary - emphasizing the full axis.

AUTUMN 2026 AND THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM 

October continues and accelerates the cardiac emphasis noted since Jupiter’s entrance of Leo on June 29^th. Mars joined Jupiter in Leo this late September; while the Leo, South Node eclipse series began on August 12^th. We remain in a protracted season – if not, year – for heart and stroke concerns.  

            Together, Mars and Jupiter both accelerate arterial pressure and upward rising heat within the cardiovascular system. Believing physicians are wise to focus awareness on heart and circulatory health. Hawthorne berry (Crataegus) and leaf remain the most popular herbal “go-to” for increasing arterial flexibility, vasodilation, lowering blood pressure, and reducing atherosclerosis (hardened arteries and/or plaque buildup). Hawthorne is a member of the Rose family so cautions are noted for those with rose allergies.  Linden (Tilia) and Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) are herbs noted for relaxing and cooling effects that would traditionally counteract the current planetary preponderance hot, rising vital forces. Linden is a mellow, neurologically soothing, hypotensive and vasodilating herb that seems to calm the spinal nerves - ideal for the panicky fire sign type who might become anxious under this excess of fiery planets throughout this Fall. Motherwort is famous for pulling energy downward, cooling, and reducing palpitation. Both modestly reduce blood pressure. 

            This season seeks to correct imbalances. Libra reveals where anything is lurching to an imbalanced tipping point! Enjoy Libra’s “Pause Point” on the Cosmic Pendulum! Perhaps this will be strongest near the October 20^th New Moon. This is a good time to plan some personal space for cloud watching contemplation while encouraging balance in the body, thought and action!

            The October 26th full Moon in Scorpio-Taurus is signals an important event – too often associated with large seismic movements, floods and mudslides. One often notes a building of fluidic or mucoid pressure in the neck, and ear-nose-throat with Taurus full Moons. This can be (hypothetically) offset by reducing mucus creating foods and excess salt in the diet. Be attentive to children who are prone to ear infections for a good week prior to one month following.             Under late October’s Scorpio reign, the vital force continues to influence the kidneys, although dropping now down into the lower urinary tract (bladder, ureters), the colon, nose, entire excretory system, uterus and generative organs. As suggested by the partnered axis of Scorpio and Taurus, the vocal cords (Taurus) are strongly connected to the generative organs and colon (Scorpio). Singing is a remarkably effective healing tool for those that know the method!  We will discuss more about the transformative Scorpio time in next month’s “Cosmic Currents”. Yes, the cosmic currents are complex yet fascinating and somewhat remind me of an ice cream machine. Envision the different flavors of soft ice cream deliciously swirling into your handy cone of understanding.
