The Turning of The Spiral

This Northern Hemisphere’s Summer Solstice of late June 20th – 21st occurs annually as Sol enters the deeply sensitive, Moon-ruled zodiac sign of Cancer. This sign’s glyph features two inward curling spirals – a perfect depiction of Cancer’s centripetal, or inward moving properties. Now, the solar force retreats inward, towards the stomach, breast, womb and most essentially, our inner world of personal memories and feelings. Renowned poetic nature philosopher and Cancer native Henry David Thoreau presents an ideal portrait of this sign’s reflective superpowers. No sign exceeds Cancer’s ability to personally connect, feel and hear the Divine through sacred space, ancestors, and affectionate bonding!
Uranus Unleashed!
June 2026
Uranus reentered Gemini on April 25th for a seven-year stay. I’ve always pondered why it was that Uranus’s rulership was not assigned to Gemini (instead of Aquarius). After all, Uranus was first discovered in Gemini – the sign that also hosts Uranus’s North Node, thus being a prime celestial entry portal for “his” imaginative, chaotic, and electrical influences! Additionally, the noted characteristics of Uranus and Gemini have much in common.
We witness the revolutionary “Uranian” flavor of Gemini in several wildly eccentric, experimental, and trend-setting singers born in this sign (e.g., Cyndi Lauper, Laurie Anderson, Prince, Bob Dylan).
The Ears of the Zodiac
May 2026
It’s Taurus time! Spring commenced at the previous sign, Aries, “the eyes of the zodiac”. Taurus governs the ears, mouth, throat, vocal cords, lower jaw, neck, and the pleasure of eating. Self-nourishment of both food and subtle ‘pranas’ occurs at this sign. A prominent entry portal for the vital forces is located in the medulla at the back of the head, within Taurus’ body zone – adjacent to the throat and vocal cords.
Taurus represents the inner ear as much as the outer. Spiritually, at this juncture on the zodiacal wheel, we engage in deep listening and enjoy heightened receptivity to sonic vibrations. The Taurus ruled vocal cords reveal the vibration unique to each human soul. The spiritually discerning practitioner hears the precise state of spiritual and vibrational health within the voice.
The Eyes of the Zodiac

The ancient “Grand Man” of the zodiac commences each yearly cycle at Spring Equinox with the first day of Aries, the head of the year. Zodiacal Man’s eyes are situated in Aries, because the celestial ram rules the eyes and strongly influences vision, motor nerves, the upper head, and brain in general (sans the ears and nose). Aries also co-rules the adrenal glands. We began this discussion in last month’s column with the arrival of the significant Saturn-Sun conjunction in Aries.
This month continues this cosmic fiery streak with a surprising soiree at Aries’ house. Multiple planetary adversaries are entertained in the head zone, all primed for herbal remediation. Hot Mars enters Aries, his home domain, on April 9th, further heating and drying all things head-related, plus stimulating the upward and outward rush of heat through the head. “Hot heads”, beware your tempers!
ARIES & THE FIRE MASTER
March 2026
Envision the solar system as a colossal cosmic clock. Saturn represents our formidable “cosmic hour hand” (governing seven-year cycles), whereas Sol acts as our minute hand (ruling year and monthly cycles). Luna facilitates the role of the second hand of this scheme, counting off our weeks, days, and hours.
Saturn entered Aries on February 13th. He now awaits Sol’s joining him in this same sign, thus “triggering off” this Arian influence that will remain in situ through April 28th, 2028. The Saturn-Sol precise conjunction occurs on March 25th at 4:55 am ET but is felt strongly from the March 20th Spring Equinox.
Neptune's Realm & the Extracellular Matrix
February 2026
Neptune, with his famous trident, governs the oceans and co-governs Pisces, the sign of the internal ocean. This internal sea is called the “Extracellular Matrix” (ECM). It is composed of the fluids that lie between our capillary walls and our cellular walls. Fluids enter and return to this ocean much in the same way that rains depart and return to the sea, in a continuous fluid-delivery cycle. Nutrients and hormones are dumped into the internal ocean and then taken up by the cells. The cells, in turn, then dump their metabolic waste back into the matrix - to be taken up by the lymphatic vessels heading toward the lymph nodes and finally, to the heart. Eventually, the fluid travels to the kidneys for further sifting, balancing, excretion, or recycling.
The Aquarius Mystery

Aquarius is depicted as a man pouring water from the spout of a large urn, or amphora. What exactly does this water symbolize, and why is he pouring it out? And, what might this mean for our personal health? Herein lies the mystery of Aquarius!
Aquarius is one third of a trilogy of “air” signs, inclusive of airy colleagues Gemini and Libra. All three of these signs are represented by two non-curving adjacent lines. Neither are any air signs depicted by animals. Together, the three air signs govern the nerves and neurological currents coursing from the body to the brain, and from the brain back to the body. Could these adjacent lines symbolize this?
Capricorn, Lord of the Solstice
December 2025
The zodiac’s tenth sign, Capricorn, commences precisely with the Winter Solstice. This year, these simultaneous celestial events occur on December 21st at precisely 7:03 am Pacific Time. Worldwide, ancient peoples constructed immense and mysterious stone structures precisely positioned to funnel the first rays of the solstice’s sunlight upon a willing initiate. There must be something remarkably potent about Capricorn’s first light to cause our ancestors to go to all that trouble! However, this year’s solstice is notable because the red planet Mars has entered Capricorn’s gates just days prior, on December 14th. This Mars “ingress” event is notable because Mars is traditionally “exalted” in Capricorn, and thus a considerably positive asset to this sign. Envision Capricorn as “Lord of the Solstice”, and Mars as his powerful and respected minister.
The Secrets of Sagittarius
November 2025
The Celestial Centaur’s secret is revealed in the symbology of his image. Sagittarius’s lower body is a horse, while his upper half is depicted as an archer aiming an arrow. Spiritually, this holds great significance, and we will explore that later. Medically, however, his bow symbolizes the spinal column, our great bodily switchboard (the CNS). Sagittarius’ arrow depicts, in part, the vital forces racing through the spinal cord’s mysterious channels. The great twentieth-century physician William Davidson stated that Mars in Sagittarius bequeathed his natives “too much life”. I’ll be discussing this fascinating concept at this month’s ‘Herbalism & Medical Astrology Summit’, where Adriana Ayales will also grace us with a Master Class.
The Scales and the Scorpion
October 2025
October 2025 is here, heralding in an exquisitely potent planetary presence in Scorpio, the sign of self-purification and waste excretion - relative to both our physical and psychological levels! This influence increases from October 6th, and yet again from Sol’s ingress into this “spooky” sign on October 22nd, just before Halloween. Until then, the Sun traverses Libra. The zodiacal scales precede the celestial Scorpion in the same manner that Libra governs the body parts and physical functions immediately preceding the traditional organs and functions of Scorpio. Let’s explain this more fully.
RIDING THE DRAGON'S TAIL: Surfing the Pisces-Virgo Eclipse Axis
September 2025
A proverbial “Celestial Dragon” symbolizes the path of the Lunar Nodes, those astrologically essential junctures where the Moon’s orbit intersects the Sun’s path (the ecliptic plane). This Dragon was believed to churn the ocean of time and karma as he undulated backwards through the Zodiac in 18.6-year cycles. He currently stretches himself across the Sun’s path (ecliptic) with his greedy head in Pisces and his churning tail in Virgo.
The quintessential sign of physical health maintenance is Virgo. Conversely, the sign of spiritual and psychic health maintenance is Pisces! These eclipses nag us to get ourselves together on both levels. Eclipses will always occur near these Lunar Nodes, and in some months, we get two: one Solar and one Lunar.
The Heart of the Lion

The sign Leo governs the heart. Leo is “governed” by the Sun. The Sun is also said to rule the heart. Renaissance doctors envisioned Sol as our great provider of Vital Force, and the physical heart—Sol’s terrestrial proxy—as the bodily center of that same essential, life-giving force. The renowned 17th-century astrological herbalist Nicholas Culpeper perfectly expressed this in the following statement:
Regard the heart, keep that upon its wheels, because the Sun is the fountain of life.
Traditionally, Leo’s season made the perfect time to nourish and support both heart and circulation.
The Gate Of The Ancestors

The Northern Hemisphere’s Summer Solstice of late June occurs annually as Sol enters the deeply feeling, Moon-ruled zodiac sign of Cancer. However, this year’s event was a “Super Solstice”. Why? Because Jupiter, our solar system’s “King of Planets,” also just entered Cancer (!), precisely on July 9, at 2:58 pm EDT.
Jupiter’s Cancer “ingress” occurs approximately once every twelve years, remaining here for about one year, signaling an astrologically newsworthy event.
The sign Cancer opens the Gate of the Ancestors, governing memory, mother, and root. Cancer co-governs the navel—where our nutrient-cycling umbilical cord ties us with our mother, and her umbilicus with her mother, and so forth—far back into deep time through our ongoing line of ancestresses.
Gemini + The Breath of Life

“Gemini 2025” commences on May 20. Why does this thirty-day season emphasize breathing? In medical astrology, Gemini governs the bronchial tubes, upper lungs, and the inspiration of the breath, in addition to the arms, hands, capillaries, peripheral and afferent sensory nerves, and speech. As the Sun enters this sign each year, the Universal Vital Force enlivens these parts and their functions.
Do most of your Gemini friends enjoy talking (a lot!), writing, reading, and using their fast and agile hands? Or do they gravitate toward games, words, spontaneous fun, or coordinative exercises? Astrologers have observed these traits for over two millennia, but why should this be so? Consider the symbol of twins: two beings emerging from a single source. The Singing Stones of May
May 2025
I attended grammar school in a diverse, working-class, inner-city neighborhood with a strong Irish Catholic constituency. On “May Day,” a “May Pole” was erected in our concrete playground where we children were instructed to circumambulate in a precise gender-staggered arrangement. Dance we did, each one attached by a long, colorful ribbon affixed to the top of the May Pole, much to the delight of our parents (oblivious to this being an obvious reenactment of an ancient fertility rite customary to many parts of the British Isles).
Celtic legends abound of monolithic standing stones that sing, talk, walk, spin, or drink on May Day. Some towns have even been known to turn or rotate specific stones yearly upon this precise date. Were they relieving a mysterious and forgotten Earth species of current pressure?

Sleepers awaken!
This year’s Spring Equinox (March 19-20) marked Sol’s yearly ingress into the “cardinal” fire sign of Aries, a sign that comprises a season of approximately 30 days and extends three further weeks into April. Energy literally “springs” upward!
What could this mean physically? First, these two water signs co-govern the lymphatic system. Pisces rules the extracellular matrix, that great ocean within that lies between our capillary walls and our cells. This sign is also held to govern the whole lymphatic system and feet, although Cancer indeed governs the thoracic duct and the lymphatics of breast tissue (and much else besides).
THE VIRGIN, THE FISH & THE DRAGON: Medical Insights for the Virgo-Pisces Eclipse Season

Medical astrologers get excited when the “Celestial Dragon” changes zodiac signs! This so-called dragon’s positive pole, the traditional “Dragon’s Head,” is identical with the astronomical North Lunar Node.
Conversely, the negative pole, or “Dragon’s Tail,” is precisely opposite that point, identical to the South Lunar Node. These constitute two ends of one polarity. Soli-Lunar energies enter our bodily field at the Head and exit at the Tail.
The Waters Within

We can whimsically imagine how the water Nymphs (Naiads) must feel this winter! Their Water element has been severely compromised for months because both traditional “malefics,” (Mars and Saturn) are traveling through the Water signs. Chilly Saturn has been slowly freezing Pisces’ waters, while feisty Mars has been simultaneously “boiling” sister water sign Cancer for months! This energetic conundrum peaks during the reign of the Water sign Pisces (February 18 - March 20).

Aquarius + The “Zing Time”

For most of the world, January 19 inaugurates a thirty-day season best known as “Aquarius.”
As one of the zodiac’s three “Air” signs, Aquarius holds a preeminent influence over the oxygenation of the blood, specifically the oxygen-carbon exchange within each cell. Indeed, sub-oxygenation is a noted problem for some Aquarian natives!
Aquarius also governs the venous circulation (with Venus), the calves and ankles, the “quality of the blood,” the spinal nerves (with Sagittarius), and most essentially, that mysterious, little-known electrical system of the body. Coincidentally, the two parallel “zig-zag” lines composing Aquarius’ glyph resemble how we depict lightning bolts!
